Very rare first edition of this imaginary voyage to the poles. The author of this imaginary voyage took vessel from Amsterdam to Greenland, and on the way was unfortunate enough to be drawn into a remarkable whirlpool. His vessel was sucked into the central cavity and came out into the ocean again in the southern hemisphere. After various adventures in the Antarctic continent where they discovered an island with warm fogs, strange and disproportionate animals and plants, a column of fire on the sea... as well as the vestiges of a vanished civilization, the vessel reached home again via the Cape of Good Hope. One of the first accounts of underground travel which is reminiscent of Verne's account. Ill. with 5 engr. pl. showing mainly plants. Title in red & black
