Description du lot
Folio: [12]-120 pp.; 25 pl. (pl. 21 bound upside down, sm. marg. repairs, sl. browned, a bit foxed and with some light damp stains).
Later sheep, marbled paper covers, parchment corners (sl. used).
Rare complete "Straetsboeck" (1st ed.), a pilot guide of the Mediterranean with (according to the title and 2 map cartouches) newly cut copperplates by Pieter Goos. Goos, an Amsterdam bookseller, bought the plates from Anthonie Jacobsz's "Zeespiegel" in 1650, but for this "Straetsboeck", he engraved, printed and published the charts in his own bookshop "Op 't Water". The text was after Jacobsz's 1656 ed. of "Straetsboek", named after the voyage through the Straits of Gibraltar. Nice copy with some signs of use, just enough to make it stand out as a seaworthy atlas!
Ref. Koeman, Goos 44A.
Prov. "Simon Van Lissum"? (ms. entry).
