Drawings, watercolour, heightened with gum, pencil, 19,5 x 12 cm, cardboard 28 x 23 cm, pen signed and dated (sl. rubbed spots at top margin).
Beautiful watercolours of two tropical birds, including Parra sinensis and Palamedea cornuta. Original illustration by Traviès for Charles d'Orbigny's "Dictionnaire Universel d'Histoire Naturelle", Oiseaux pl. 10. Traviès (1809-1876) was a French watercolourist, lithographer and illustrator. He regularly exhibited works at the Paris Salon between 1831 and 1866 and was primarily known for his paintings of natural history subjects, especially birds.
