Contemp. three-quarter green shagreen, marbled paper boards with gilt fillet, gilt orn. spines with raised bands, gilt top edges (faded spines, joints starting to split, dulled corners).

First 8vo edition (1st ed. folio under the title "Illustrations of British birds": 1835-1841 & 1837-1844) with vol. 1-2 from a later edition. Various number of pl. from one copy to another. Ours with 434 lithogr. pl. : 426 hand-coloured and 8 in black. H.L. Meÿer (1797-1865) was a British artist and naturalist with German origins, very talented in representing birds.
