Description du lot

Folio (34,4 x 21,5 cm): [494] ff., on paper and thin vellum, in Arabic, written in an elegant naskh script in black and red ink, 11 ll. (some ff. repaired, occ. sm. tears, some soiling and spotting, minor water stains).

Later black buckram, covers with elaborated floral pattern, flat spine, red morroco doublures ruled with gilt borders (sl. faded, joint loosening)

Very fine illumination: opening and closing double-page richly illuminated in colours and gold with foliate scrolls (ff. 1v-2r and 493v-494), verses separated by pointed-blue gold roundels, surah headings in red or black ink amidst foliate scrolls on gold and polychrome illuminated panels, some with large and elaborated decor, margins ruled in gold, illuminated marginal devices throughout. This manuscript was executed at the beginning of the Afsharid period by the calligrapher Jaʿfar Muhammad Hān al-Husaynī, member of a dynasty of renowned calligraphers.
