8vo: front.-[6]-216-[4] pp. (some sl. spotting, damp stain to upper margin).
Contemp. mottled calf, gilt orn. spine with raised bands, red spr. edges (sl. rubbed, wormholes to front joint, lower joint splitting, catalogue notice on front pastedown).
Rare first edition illustrated with a frontispiece representing drunk Bacchus on a barrel. Defending himself "qu'on me croye aussi yvrogne qu'Érasme qui a fait l'Éloge de la folie étoit fou" (pp. [1-2]), Sallengre published this work at the age of 18, he died 9 years later, in which he gives anecdotes on the medical merit of drinking, the eloquence we can find in wine, an history of drunkness to the first Christians and popes, notes on nations who like wine, rules to drink well, answers to objections saying that drinking makes people uncivil and lose their mind, etc.
