First two parts of the rare first edition of the Dutch translation (orig. Paris 1676-79), trsl. by J.H. Glazemaker, of this famous travel account by the French pioneer J.B. Tavernier (1605-1689). These first two parts describe his travels through Europe, Persia and Turkey. Two more parts were published, on India and Japan, not present here. Between 1643 and 1682, Tavernier travelled 6 times to the Middle and Far East. His 7th expedition, to Russia, was his final and fatal one. Engr. ill.: frontispiece, full-page author's portrait by H. Causé, 8 full-page and 15 folding plates depicting views of Bagdad, Bandar Abbas and Kandahar, battle scenes, ceremonies, shooting games at Isfahan, torture methods (the stoning of a boy, the burning of swindlers, building four walls around a convict, pounding to death in a mortar), animals, Persian calligraphy, throne room of the serail, the Sultan hunting, etc. A few pl. signed J. Luyken. 2nd part with separate title "Nieuwe en naaukeurige beschryving van 't Serrail of Hof van de Turksche Kaizer", with date 1681. In Gothic type.
