Contemp. chiselled and openwork silver binding on a black velvet background, boards decorated with interlacing and interwoven branches and foliage extending over onto the spine, chiselled silver clasp decorated with a small cameo ornated with a Christ on the cross, ivory moiré tabis doublures and endpapers, a.e.g. Very nice copy.
Devotional book in Gothic type beautifully illustrated with woodcuts: 1 front., 6 pl. on China paper and 3 head- & tail-pieces on China paper, some large initials enhanced with red gold. Enriched with 5 pious images (loose), of which one printed in gold on blue transparent gelatin leaf (Becher, Münchengrätz), 1 contemp. ms. pray to saint Bernard in German (1 f.). One of the pictures joined to the book, illustrated with a Christ with the French inscription "Ceci est mon corps, ceci est mon sang" and on the back a prayer in German, bears the ms. inscription "Souvenir de la 1ère communion de Léo" (Souvenir of Leo's first communion) dated 8 December 1890. Prince Leopold (1878-1916) was the son of Princess Louise of Belgium and grandson of King Leopold II and Queen Marie-Henriette. The presence of this document suggests that the book probably belonged to Marie-Henriette.
