Contemp. mottled calf, spine with 5 raised bands (spine and corners damaged, tr. of wear).

1st French oblong edition (1st Italian: 1567), offering the reader an eloquent description of the 16th-c. towns in the Low Countries. Petrus Montanus updated the French text by François de Belleforest (1530-1583) for the Cornelis Claesz. 1609 edition, here used by Janssonius. With the engr. title, the coat of arms of the 17 Provinces, and 95 copperplates often newly engraved by Pieter van den Keere, incl.: all 95 numbered plates with text on reverse, 11 (of 20) pl. "to be inserted" according to the "Table des pages" and 5 extra pl. (Amsterdam: Dam and Vismarkt, Zeilende windwagen, Zeilende ijsschuit and Mansfeld/Piramide). The presence of two of these, the "windwagen" and the "ijsschuit", together with the prints of Bethune and Bourbourg make this copy particularly interesting and rather exceptionnal. The 9 missing pl. of the regions are in fact rarely present and, if so, these do not follow the "Table des pages". The pl. of Namur County and "Berghe de S.Winoc" do not occur in this ed.
