Description du lot
Engraving, 58,1 x 41,6 cm, laid paper (lower margin with text and address cut, browned, foxing, edges strengthened, small tears on the edges).
Large impressive engraving.
Scene from Torquato Tasso, "La Gerusalemme Liberata", 1581. Rinaldo lying in the lap of Armida, who looks at herself in the mirror. Copy in reverse after the engraving by Pieter de Jode II after Anthony van Dyck, dated 1644. The original painting by Van Dyck is in Paris (Louvre, inv. 1235) and the grisaille in London (National Gallery, inv. NG877.2). De Jode's print is described in the New Hollstein (Pieter de Jode II) as one of his most accomplished engravings. This is a skillful copy.
Ref. New Hollstein (Anthony van Dyck) 625, copy.
