Fighting card players and Death.

Etching, 20,2 x 26,7 cm, laid paper, signed in the plate at bottom left: "Ioannes Lijvijus pinxit et fecit." and right "Franc. v. Wijngaerde ex.", two lines of Latin text in lower margin.

Under passe-partout, traces of mounting on verso. Good impression with wide margins.

A man with a knife and a man with a jug are fighting after a game of cards. The presence of Death makes clear the fight will not end well for one of them. Third state with the address of Frans van den Wijngaerde. He probably acquired the plate after the death of Martinus van den Enden after 1654. The lack of plate tone and the wide margins suggest this might be an 18th-century impression.
