50. [Dutch]

DUSART, Cornelis

A woman having her foot cupped.

Amsterdam, Jacob Gole, ca. 1695-1724

Etching, 25,6 x 17,3 cm, laid paper with unidentified watermark, signed and dated in the plate at bottom left: "Corn. Du Sart. fe. et inv. 1695.", address in lower margin at bottom right: "J. Gole Exc. Amstelodami...", title in lower margin at centre: "KOPSTER", below two columns with two lines of Dutch text each (trimmed to platemark).

Traces of hinges on verso. Good impression.

An old woman applies a cupping glass to the foot of a young woman. Behind them, a man sharpens his surgical instruments. The outfits of the man and old woman make clear these are quacks. The Dutch verses in the margin give the whole scene a sexual connotation: "Zet jy de koppen maar, zei dikke Piet tot Tryn, / Ik slyp de vlymen vast, het zal haar heel cureeren, / En word Lys flau, en helpt geen veurschootband noch wyn, / Dan zal ik aanstonds met myn spuytding haar klisteeren." Third state with the address of Jacob Gole. Before the address was erased by Pierre-Francois Basan.
Ref. Hollstein VI.55.12.III (of IV).
