Engraving, 20,9 x 29,5 cm, laid paper, signed in the plate at bottom right "M de Vos inuentor / CJVisscher excudit", Latin inscription in lower margin (light foxing outside platemark, trace of mounting in former album at left edge).

Good impression with wide margins.

Part of a series of four scenes from the life of St John the Baptist and Christ. Possibly engraved by Hieronymus Wierix. First published in Antwerp by Gerard de Jode in the "Thesaurus" of 1585. The plate was republished in Amsterdam by Claes Jansz. Visscher with his address in several of his picture Bibles. Third state with number 1 added at bottom right and serial mark C added at top left.
