Large folio: front.-[9]-318-[6] ff. (clear waterstain at corners of first few ff., smaller at last few ff., light toning, some spotting).
Contemp. mottled calf (sl. rubbed & stained, corners bumped, a few sm. def.), covers with triple gilt-ruled border and gilt corner pieces, gilt orn. spine with 6 raised bands (joints split at head & tail, head & tail def.), red leather title label, gilt inside dentelles, marbled endpapers, a.e.g. Good copy.
Enlarged second folio edition (1st 1702), illustrated with a nice engr. frontispiece with a portrait of Louis XIV, by Simonneau after Ch.-A. Coypel. Each page with engr. ornamental border with emblematic subjects and 318 engr. medals (each one obverse & reverse) in-text by Cochin depicting portraits of Louis XIV, allegories of historical events and institutions. Engr. endpieces on most ff. The explanations were written by i.a. Boileau, Racine, Tallemant and Charpentier. Printed in Philippe Grandjean's finest Romain du Roy fonts, designed by order of Louis XIV. "Plus complète et plus belle que la première [édition]" (Brunet). Copy containing the preface, not present in all copies, which was in fact suppressed from the 1st ed.
