ALLARD, Carl (attributed to). DE HOOGHE, Romeyn (after)

Pralende Beyerse en Franse aftogt van Brussel en de Schelde ["of de verbruste triomf der Franse haanen" (subtitle index)].

[Amsterdam, A. Allard], 1708

Engraving, 28,5 x 38 cm, laid paper (sm. repair in margin, sm. tear without loss).

Very rare caricature on the retreat of the Elector of Bavaria and the French army in 1708 during the War of the Spanish Succession, figuring the Elector sitting on a chariot pulled by toads, the French commanders the Duc de Bourgogne (Louis XIV's grandson) and the Duc de Vendôme being at variance, so that the allied army eventually could crush the French at the battle of Oudenaarde. Part of the print series "Het Palmhof der Bondgenooten", 9 pl. published within "'t Lust-Hof van Momus" and in fact a reissue adapted to the new political context of R. de Hooghe's "Arlequin furieux et Pantagion triomphant" from the series "Caricatures on James II". At the left is a dialogue in verse of the protagonists, starting with the Elector's "Geen held ooit mij gelijk in vechten en in vluchten" and at the end "Wij stroppedragers en wij Bruggers kome[n] smeke[n] bij Brit en Batavier en vordre Bondgenoots wijl wij door dwang reeds vroeg in 't jaar goed Frans geleke[n], verleend ons tog genâ, die manne[n] zijn des doods".
