21 parts of this important work on orchids by the Belgian botanist, horticulturist, dealer and importer who specialised in orchids L. Linden (1817-1898). Comprising parts January till December 1892 (XII-XXIII) of the English ed. and August till December 1894 (10th vol., issue 1-5) and March till July 1895 (10th vol., issue 8-12) of the French ed. Totalling 84 chromolithographic plates by P. de Pannemaeker, G. Severeyns and J. Goffart after A. Goosens and others. Between 1835 and 1844 J.J. Linden made extensive trips as a botanical explorer and horticulturalist to South and Central America. He pursued rigorous fieldwork on orchids, and he established the methods for their cultivation. Afterwards he worked as a plant dealer in Luxembourg from 1845 to 1852 and became director of the Jardin Royal de Zoologie et d'Horticulture in Brussels from 1852 to 1861. He continued his activities as a dealer, introducing new plants (particularly orchids) in Brussels and Ghent. His son Lucien Linden (1853-1940) succeeded him as director of the company in 1876. The publication was begun in collaboration with his son Lucien and his colleague Émile Rodigas. After Linden's death, Lucien oversaw the continuation of the series.
