Description du lot
24mo: [8]-345-[19] pp., engr. title within pagination.
Contemp. overlapping vellum.
Rare 1st ed., one of two printings in the same year, of this anonymous volume in the Elzevier series "Respublicae" with information on the geography, inhabitants, economy and history of Russia, the Baltic and Black Sea regions, compiled from various sources. Owing to their small size, this bestselling series caused a stir among early modern printers and quickly became famous as the first pocketbooks, though it was definitely the ancestor of the modern travel guide as well. With in this case, e.g., an account on the ethics of the Samoyedic people.
