Folio: [4]-541-[1-2 bl.-35-1 bl.] pp. (some dampstaining in lower half).
Old mottled sheep, gilt ruled border on covers, gilt spine with 6 raised bands, sp. edges (rubbed, sm. def. at head and tail). Good copy.
Major ed. of a work by the Italian Jesuit Maffei (1533-1603) on the Portuguese conquests and the Jesuit stations in India, the East Indies, and the region of the Arabic Sea to about 1557. Book VI deals with China, and book XII is mainly concerned with Japan. The added letters about or from Japan were written between 1549 and 1574. With the large folding world map after Ortelius (Shirley 166; outer margin of map short but compl.). Woodcut mark on title.
