2 vol. Text, 8vo: 426 pp. (pp. 1-4 missing incl. the author's portrait; dark foxing, some ff. sl. age-toned, sm. hole in text p. 17). - Atlas, oblong 4to: title, table of plates and 75 pl. (some pl. sl. age-toned, occ. sl. foxing).
Contemp. three-quarter red shagreen, gilt ruled marbled paper covers, gilt orn. spines with raised bands, gilt top-edges (partly rubbed).
Atlas complete with title and 75 plates, all hand-coloured and partly heightened with Arabic gum: map with coloured borders engr. by J. Collon and 74 nice lithographs by G. Simonau, Madou (Colossus of Rhodes), van Genk, Boëns, Kreins, Vanden Kerchoven, P.J. Delpierre, etc. after P.J. Witdoeck and colonel Rottiers. They depict the outskirts of the island, ruins, old buildings of the Crusaders and Knights Hospitalier before they left for Malta, etc. At the request of the Dutch King, Rottiers and the painter Witdoek left for a scientific expedition to Rhodes. The island, under Turkish domination, was not often visited by foreigners at that time yet.
