2 parts in 1 vol., 4to; 2 front., 1 engr. title and 61 pl. protected with tissue guards (some sl. foxing).
19th-c. three-quarter red shagreen, marbled paper boards, gilt orn. spine with raised bands (sm. traces of use).
First edition illustrated with a hand-coloured frontispiece, a portrait, one engr. title and 61 steel-engravings after original sketches by the Elliott. They depict mainly views of India: Shuhur Fortress at Jaipur, Aurungzebe's Mosque at Benares, the Taj Mahal, the Water Palace at Mandu, ruins of Old Delhi, Jahara Baud at Agra, the "Jahara Baug" (or the Aram Bagh) at Agra (i.e. oldest Mughal Garden in India), Dus Awtar - caves of Ellora, etc.; but also Macao, Tiger Island (Canton River), a Chinese pagoda between Canton and Whampoa, Thubare, etc. The commander Robert Elliott (1801-1875) travelled in India, Canton and the Red Sea, from 1822 to 1824. Descriptive text by the English poet and travel writer Emma Roberts (ca. 1794-1840) who lived for many years in India and is known for her memoirs about the country.
