Contemp. marbled calf, gilt central coat of arms, gilt-tooled spine with raised bands (bindings very used, but pl. generally neat and in good condition).
First edition of Montfaucon's founding milestone of classical archaeology. This vast pictorial encyclopedia with copious engravings of the gods, heroes, religious customs, architecture, military practices, domestic habits, and funerary rites of the ancient world, all after manuscripts deposited in French libraries, encompasses: the engr. portrait of J. Audran after N. Largillière and 974 engr., some on double pages. Titles in red and black. Without the 5 supplementary vol.
