Description du lot

12 etchings, 12 x 24,5 cm, laid paper with watermark, signed in plate "Callot in. f." (with full margins, occ. pin-holes in corners).

Complete series generally attributed to Collignon (1609-1657), consisting of a title, ten views of Florence, and another view included in the set by Henriet but not engraved or designed by Callot. "The set was first published by Henriet and therefore, after 1630. But the date of the execution of the plates themselves, and indeed their attribution to Callot, has been disputed. While the general view has been that the landscapes were designed by Callot when he was in Italy, some authors give the execution of the plates to Collignon (Mariette, Meaume). Lieure attributes the plates to Callot but for the wrong reasons: he identified the set as a series commissioned by Giovanni de' Medici which is mentioned in various documents; however, this commission concerned a view of Gradisca set on several plates which are now lost." (British Museum). The title-print is the first state, before the inclusion of the view of Florence. Ten other plates are 2nd state (of 3).
