Description du lot
Large folio: [4]-4-[1] pp., 47 ff. (descr. of plates); 48 pl. (minor soiling).
19th-c. half brown leather, marbled paper on covers, gilt orn. spine with raised bands and label (tail missing, head part. loose, rubbed). Very nice inside copy.
Rare original edition magnificently illustrated with 48 very fine hand-coloured engr. plates (1 uncol., as is usually the case), after paintings by Pieter van Loo and Hendrik Schwegman, depicting in an exquisitely realistic manner new and rare plants cultivated in Holland, many of which were grown in the celebrated author's Haarlem nursery. The interest in plants from Cape Town at that time is well represented in this book: twenty of the plants shown are from South Africa. The text, by G. Voorhelm Schneevoogt and edited by S.J.M. van Geuns, professor of medicine and botany at Utrech, is in Latin, Dutch, French and German.
