First edition of the Dutch trsl. of the encyclopedic description of Spain and Portugal by Alvarez de Colmenar, probably a Frenchman staying in the Netherlands. The orig. French ed. titled "Les Délices de l'Espagne et du Portugal" was published in a sm. 8vo, at the same time as this Dutch folio ed. by P. vander Aa in Leiden. Lavishly illustrated with maps and engr. pl.: allegorical title, large title-vign. and full-page dedication, all signed J. Goeree, a folding general map of Spain and Portugal and 164 almost half-page engr. in-text with regional maps, plans, views, and costumes, complete with the folding coastal view of Barcelona. The extensive index added to the present work presents a geographical and historical dictionary of Spain and Portugal. Title in red and black. Text in 2 col. Ink censorship on bare male, female and cherub body parts throughout (even on garden statues) and on the word "Mis-brood" on p. 58 of part II.
