Interesting (unpublished?) document with 95 manuscript tables for measuring the exact time by the position of the sun using a "sextant solaire", for each day of the year at locations on the 51st parallel north (our regions). The industrious Liège inventor and watchmaker Hubert Sarton (1748-1828) is famous for being the official "horloger" of Charles de Lorraine and François-Charles de Velbrück, Prince Bishop of Liège, and for designing, in 1778, one of the first automatic, self-winding watches. The preliminary pages of the document act as an explanation and manual: "Savoir l'heure et la minute du temps-vrai, avec sureté invariable, est un objet d'utilité et d'agrément pour toutes les classes du public." After the famous German cartographer and astronomer Friedrich Christoph Müller (1751-1808), Sarton (the author of this document?) "éprouvoit l'urgente nécessité d'un moyen plus précis, plus stable, plus aisé que les cadrans solaires ou méridiens.". The first 2 tables, with "hauteur du soleil 0 dégrés" in the morning and in the evening, evidently show the exact time of sunrise and sunset for each day of the year. Tables within woodcut frames.
