1 atlas, 4to: xlii pp.; 31 pl., occ. hand-coloured in outline, and 7 text vol., 8vo (n.c.).
Uniformly bound in fine contemp. calf, gilt decorated flat spines (sl. tr. of wear, title atlas).
2nd ed. (1st ed.: 1788) of the fictional travel journal of the Scythian sage Anacharsis (4th c. BCE). Considered as "Appealing to every class by reason of its charming narratives and vivid pictures", it had a profound impact on the development of French neo-classicism and the growth of philhellenism. Atlas by Jean-Denis Barbié Du Bocage, complete with the 31 engr. maps, fold. or on double page, incl. a general map of Greece and its islands, the environs of Athens, Phocis and Dorida, Thessaly, Plato and his disciples at Cape Sounion, the Cyclades etc. One of the most influential and successful attempts to popularise and disseminate what was known of Greek antiquity!
