Description du lot

Dutch vellum binding (ms. notes).
First Dutch edition (1st Fr.: 1716) of Frézier's travel account. A.F. Frézier (1682-1773), a French military engineer who was sent to South America by Louis XIV of France, is best remembered for introducing the "Fragaria chiloensis", a wild strawberry that was hybridised to create the modern garden strawberry. First published in French in 1716, this edition is illustrated with 37 maps, city plans, plates depicting natives, and natural history specimens, many folding. Particularly interesting is pl. 9 which depicts the Chilean game of La Sueca and which is widely regarded as the earliest printed depiction of a form of golf. Includes an anonymous treatise about the application of Indian governing practices by Jesuits in Paraguay.
