Description du lot

25 original photographs, 22,4 x 28,2 cm, mounted on heavy paper, protected with tissue-guards, legends on photos.

Kept in an obl. folio album, boards of olive wood with carved out Jerusalem cross on front board (front board loose), leather flat spine (completely worn).

Fascinating collection of photographs of the Holy Land. Published by Meo, originally from Italy and owner of the renowned Boulos Meo Antique Shop located at the Jaffa Gate in the middle of the western wall of the Old City, a landmark for over 124 years. "The shop thrived amidst Jerusalem's historical and political richness and witnessed enormous changes as it grew from a Persian rug store into one of the city's most successful antiquarian shops". Among the photographs: Jaffa and its shore line, the market in Jaffa, streets in Jerusalem, Jerusalem within the walls, the Holy Sepulchre Church, the interior of Al-Aqsa, the Cenacle site, Dome of the Rock, the Tomb of Elijah, Mount of Olives, view of Betany, the Dead Sea, etc. Photos by Félix Bonfils (1831-1891), French photographer active in the Middle East and one of the first commercial photographers to produce images of the Middle East on a large scale, and by the Brothers Zangaki: George and Constantinos Zangakis (as they are presumed to be named), active in Egypt and Algeria from 1870 to 1880 who specialised in photographing ancient monuments and scenes of everyday life.
