Beautiful scene of an elderly lady reading from a book to a young girl by candlelight. Hubertus van Hove (1814-1864) was renowned for his Dutch interiors, inspired by those of Vermeer and Pieter de Hooch. He taught at the Academy of Fine Arts of The Hague and counted Jacob Maris, Hendrick Scheeres and Christoffel Bisschop among his pupils. His paintings can now be found on the walls of the British Museum, the Rijksmuseum Amsterdam and Teylers Museum, Haarlem.
