Contemp. gold-tooled vellum, covers with gilt arms within double gilt-ruled border with repeated sm. arms and armorial cornerpieces, gilt orn. spine with 5 raised bands and sm. gilt arms on panels of the spine (upper joint starting to split), brown leather title label, traces of ties. Good copy.
One of the two 4to editions (the other 1740) of Lucanus' heroic poem on the struggle between Caesar and Pompey after the crossing of the Rubicon. Edited by Frans van Oudendorp (1696-1761), Professor of history and Latin eloquence at Leiden University and famous for editing many Latin works. Engr. title by van Bleyswyk after van der Mij and fold. engr. map of the "Mare Nostrum". Title in red & black.
