Description du lot
Drawing, pen and brown ink, with brown wash, squaring grid in black chalk, 10,5 x 8,5 cm, laid paper, numbered "33" in brown ink at upper left (trimmed, laid down on paper mount).
Under wooden frame and passe-partout.
A bearded saint reading a book, probably St Jerome. The drawing is overlaid with a quaring grid in order to aid transfer the design to a different scale. Possibly a preparation drawing for a larger painting or fresco. In style and the typical smudged application of brown wash, the sheet reminds one of the small figure studies attributed to the Milanese painter Aurelio Luini (1530-1593) and other representatives of Lombardian Mannerism.
