Oval map of Flanders from Ortelius' "Theatrum Orbis terrarum". According to some, Mercator drew and engraved this map himself. In the middle a title banderolle. The 4 corners remaining around the elliptical map are nicely decorated but do not mention the compass directions. The lady sitting in the lower part and not wearing a hat is holding the coat-of-arms of Flanders. Ref. van den Broecke, Ort 75.
