Contemp. half calf (sl. rubbed), marbled paper on covers, gilt spine with 4 raised bands (rubbed, joints, heads & tails with some def.), marbled endpapers, marbled edges. Good copy.
First edition, illustrated with 2 (id.) engr. titles ( "Entrance to the Hudson Highlands, near Newburgh"), portrait of Bartlett, the itinerary map and 117 (65, 52) fine steel engravings based on the drawings by W.H. Bartlett (1809-1854), made during his 1835 journey through the northeastern states of the USA. They show in a rather romantic manner the most famous and picturesque sites of the country, such as buildings, towns and scenery, before industrialisation: i.a. Niagara Falls, Washington's tomb, Sing-Sing, Boston, New York Bay, Yale College, the White House, the Capitol, etc.
