One of the 100 specially bound (n. 71) by Sangorski and Sutcliffe under the supervision of Stanley Bray. This copy signed by J. Buckland Wright. Designed and produced by Christopher Sandford, this edition was begun in January 1943, and completed in November, 1947. Characteristic wood-engraved illustrations of sensuous females, some full-page, by JBW. It took him four years to produce this work; he considered it his greatest achievement.
The Golden Cockerel Press was founded in 1920 by Harold Midgely Taylor at Waltham Saint Lawrence, Berkshire. His object was two-fold: to print and publish new works of literary significance by young authors and to print and publish fine editions of books of established worth. In 1924 the press was purchased by Robert Gibbings, known as illustrator and woodcutter. The greater part of the printing is done in Caslo Old Face type in several sizes with no strict uniformity of paper or bindings.
Ref. Tomkinson, p. 93. - Franklin, p. 324. - Ransom, p. 293.
