Engr., 34 x 49,5 cm, gilt decorated and hand-coloured (central folding).
Framed.
Ortelius' first world map, recognisable by the "aeternitas" in Cicero's quote unbroken on the 1st line. With augmented hachuring around the Cicero quote, characterising the 2nd st. Based upon Mercator's map of 1569, Gastaldi's map of 1561, and Diego Gutierrez' portolan map of the coastlines of the Atlantic. From an edition of Ortelius' "Theatrum orbis terrarum" published between 1574 and 1584. Nice copy.
