Lot description

4to: [8]-80 pp. (tears to first 2 ff. and p. 21 skilfully repaired, marg. foxing).

Mod. cardboard. Very good copy.

Second edition (1st: Padua, 1607), published posthumously, of Capra's work on the use and construction of proportional compasses. Illustrated with woodcut diagrams and full-page tables. The University of Padua suppressed this work after Galilei complained about plagiarism as it is almost entirely a translation of his work "Le operazioni del compasso geometrico militare" (1606). In this work, the scientist Capra (1508-1626) also claimed the invention of the proportional compass which, although it wasn't invented by Galilei, was improved by him.
Ref. Riccardi I:236 & I:554 (complete works). - Not in STC Italian.
Prov. Contemp. ms. ownership entry on title.
