Bradel half black calf with similar narrow calf strip at opposite signed Leroux 1994, gauffered iridescent velvet covers, flat spine lettered in iridescent matching colours ("Max Ernst" in green from the head and "Library" in pink from the tail), glossy white paper inner covers, orig. wraps pres. Slipcase.

Rare luxurious catalogue of Ernst's private library offered by his wife Dorothea Tanning to The Beinecke Rare Book and Manuscript Library of Yale University. Contains "books by Ernst and books he illustrated; periodicals with contributions by him [...] books inscribed to him by his friends and books by authors he liked, from Rimbaud and Villiers to E.M. Cioran [...]" (introd. by V. Giroud). Ill. with 9 b/w photographic plates.
This copy bound by he Frenchman Georges Leroux (1922-1999), one of Ernst's favourite binders: almost half the bookbindings listed in this catalogue bear his signature.
