Lot description
Extensive and varied lot on the life and activities of Joseph Bohyn (born 8/04/1890), French speaking Belgian from Kemzeke, a village between the Dutch border and Sint-Niklaas. During the colonial occupation of Java by the Netherlands, Bohyn, agricultural engineer, was the manager of the rubber plantation Tjimansgoed at Tjipatat. His archives gives us a unique insight not only into his own life, but also into Java, its inhabitants, travels between Europe and the Indonesian island, the plantations, etc.
1. More than 400 smaller photos and photo postcards documenting the family life of Joseph Bohyn. A lot of snapshots with his children (Raymond, Jean-Pierre and Michel) and wife (Yvonne van den Branden) on excursions, in the garden, with their servants, on the street, in their car, on ships (S.S. Johan de Wit, S.S. Barentsz, Koningin der Nederlanden, etc.). Certain photos concern Bohyn's work on the coffee, tea and rubber plantations. 9 larger photos: tea factory in Tjigombourg, hotel Bellevue in Buitenzorg (Bogor) Java, one portrait of Bohyn (?). - 2. Album with ca. 155 photo postcards showing Weltevreden (Batavia, a colonial country estate and administrative centre), Borobudur, Batavia, Surabaya, Bandung, streetsellers, native people, etc. Comprising also a series of telegrams, drafts and letters concerning the purchase of "maison Busschots" entre Bohyn and a notary from Sint-Gillis-Waas, Raemdonck. - 3. Large folder (1): Visas from Joseph Bohyn acquired in 1913 and 1920 to travel between Kemzeke (a Flemish village) and Batavia (capital of the Dutch East Indies), Italy, Switzerland, etc.; - birth certificate and baptismal deed of Jean-Pierre Bohyn; - travel documents, boat tickets, cargo documents and a decree for admittance for Java and Madoera; - identity papers from Baboe Bawon (depicted on several photographs), the Bohyn family housemaid who travelled a lot with the family; - menus from aboard of the MS Baloeran; - maps and plans such as the "Routekaart van Nederland naar Aden en terug" en "Routekaart van Aden naar Nederlandsch Indië en terug" door J. Groustra; - work administration, balance sheets of the Compagnie générale d'exploitation aux Indes Orientales, annual reports of the plantations and different estates. - 4. Large folder (2): 27 photos of rubber and tea plantations: Simpang-Kiri, Simpang-Kanan, Pasir Talaga, Tjigembong estate; - 5 photos: a Pelton wheel at Tjigembong; - 2 photos: new factory in Tjigembong; - 11 photos: tea and rubber estate Tjigembong, construction of a road; - 10 photos mounted on cardboard: estate Tjimansgoed, the bungalow of Bohyn, local feast and inauguration of a water reservoir; - 15 photos: tea factory in Pasir Talaga, inauguration of "bureau central de la Société, 1924, Tjimansgoed Est.", the Albert Schmitz family (godfather of Jean-Pierre). - 5.
