Lot description
8vo: xlviii-[6]-iii/xlviii-432 pp. (some usual browning and spotting).
Contemp. mottled calf, gilt orn. spine with 5 raised bands, black leather title label, red edges, marbled endpapers.
First French translation by the French physician Jacques Gibelin (1744-1828) of "Elements of mineralogy" (London 1784) by the Irish geologist and chemist Richard Kirwan (1733-1812). Still an interesting landmark in the history of mineralogy, as it shows the minerals that were known, the system of classification and the amount of knowledge of their composition (Ferguson).
