Contemp. mottled calf (corners and sides sl. rubbed, upper part of lower cover faded), gilt orn. spine on 5 raised bands, red edges, marbled endpapers.

First edition of this work on symphysiotomy by the French doctor Leroy (1742-1816). He was the first to hold a chair in midwifery at the medical faculty in Paris besides Baudelocque and was best known for the technique of symphysiotomy, also known as pelviotomy, "the surgical procedure in which the cartilage of the pubic symphysis is divided to widen the pelvis allowing childbirth when there is a mechanical problem" (Wikipedia). Leroy was the second man to perform it after its inventor Jean-René Signault (1738-?).
