Lot description

Folio: 445-[3] pp. (very light damp stain in the margin, rare small foxing, tiny wormholes in some margins).

Contemp. calf, gilt ruled covers orn. with gilt coat of arms, gilt decorated spine with raised spine, red sprinkled edges (scratches, one big to lower cover, small stains, bookpl. torn off from front pastedown).

Third edition of this work first published in Venice in 1558. The Augustinian from Verona, Panvinio (1529-1568) was fascinated by Rome, its topography, inscriptions, history, etc. He refused the position of bishop to be corrector and reviser of the books of the Vatican Library in 1556 and later was the librarian to Cardinal Alessandro Farnese. This erudite was named "antiquitatis helluo" ("glutton for Antiquity") by Paulus Manutius. Printer's device on title-page and on reverse of last leaf.
