Lot description

Frankfurt am Main, J. Jaeger, s.d

Engr., 50,5 x 61 cm, originally coloured.

Very rare map of the Austrian Netherlands. Map sheet 28 from the German atlas by Johann Wilhelm Jaeger (1718-1790). The Austrian artillery officer and contemporary of Ferraris reorganised, after his military career in 1748, the gunpowder factory of his wife's first husband. Fourteen years later, its commercial success enabled Jaeger to buy the Frankfurt bookstore of Philipp Heinrich Hutter. Subsequently, the versatile entrepreneur also bought a paper mill while his wife ran the bookstore and was selling maps. From 1768 onwards, his private enterprise published the "Grand Atlas d'Allemagne" with 81 large-scaled maps. At the end of his life he was considered the leading cartographic publisher of Germany; he had far outstripped the older companies of Homann and Seutter. His son Johann Christian continued the publication of his father's atlas between 1782 and 1803.
