8vo: 155 pl. (some spotting and browning, some offsetting).
Contemp. half sheep with corners (worn), marbled paper on covers, spine on 5 raised bands (rubbed, joints splitting), marbled edges, marbled endpapers.
Volume XIX only of this first edition of one of the most celebrated British floras. Illustrated with 155 beautifully coloured, engraved plates, most of which are drawn and engraved by James Sowerby (1757-1822), English naturalist, artist, engraver and teacher. The plates depict lichen, "composite organisms that arise from algae or cyanobacteria living among filaments of multiple fungi species in a mutualistic relationship" (Wikipedia).
