Lot description
2 parts in 1 vol., 4to: [16, engr. title incl.]-1/399-361/369-[3], 138-[21] pp. (first quire loosening, some browning, dampstaining and marginal wormholes in last half).
Contemp. calf (scratches, corners restored, gilt orn. spine on 5 raised bands (joints rubbed, starting to split, head and tail restored), red leather title label, red edges.
Later ed. (1st German ed. 1653, 1st French 1672). Ill. with 1 engr. title and 50 engravings (12 fold. pl., 38 full-pages and 1 in text) showing instruments, operations (trepanning, staphyloma, amputations, cleft lip repair, castration...), and two "enfants monstre". The German surgeon J. Scultetus (1595-1645) was the student of Girolamo Fabrizi d'Acquapendente in Padova. Title in red and black.
