Lot description
Etching, 37,1 x 29 cm (plate borders), Japanese paper, signed in plate (chine-collé).
Stuck under passe-partout, under glass and wooden frame.
A book shop where the Antwerp bookseller and printer Jacob van Liesvelt (1490-1545) and his wife are selling books to scholars. Van Liesvelt was known for his Dutch translation of the Bible, based upon Luther's German translation. In 1545, the Antwerp printer was beheaded for heresy. The etching was produced by Van Reeth after the famous painting by Henri Leys, now in the collection of the Brussels Museum of Fine Arts (inv. 3973).
