Lot description

2 parts in 1 vol., fol.: [8 incl. Fp. and typogr. title]-428-349-[17], [2]-121-[4] pp.; 43 pls of which 2 folding (censured nudes -scratched and lack of paper-, esp. on Fp. and pl. Hottentots, repaired typogr. title, continental map with tears, several pls cut short touching slightly the image, pls sl. browned, some foxing, last pages folded).

Cont. full vellum, spine on 5 raised bands, blind-stamped covers with central medallion, green ribbons (splitted joints, damaged and stained back cover, corners bumped).

Enhanced second edition (1st. ed.: 1668) of one of the most authoritative 17th-century accounts on Africa, although the author, the Dutch physician and writer Olfert Dapper (1636-1689), never visited the area. This copy includes a folding map of the African continent and a folding plate of the Angolan coast around S. Paul de Loanda; it is further enriched with 41 double-page and 56 in-text engrs depicting local fashion, flora and fauna, as well as, i.a. the towns and cities of Alexandria, Algiers, Benin, Cairo, Tangier, Tripoli, Tunis.
