Lot description
Copper engr. on 2 sheets joined, 32 x 84 cm (vertical foldings).
Under passe-partout, framed (not unframed).
Map of the Holy Land oriented with East to the top, copied after Christian van Adrichem (1533-1585) and presumably engraved by Cornelis Galle. The detailed plan of Jerusalem "Hierosolymae veteris imago" is based on the work of Juan Bautista Villalpando. The border vignettes include objects sacred to Judaism, the plan of Solomon’s Temple in the lower left corner and a view of the Temple in the lower right corner. Originally prepared in 1632 for Jacobus Tirinus's study of the Holy Land "Commentarius Vestus et Novum Testamentum", the work has been republished repeatedly. Ref. Tooley IV, 278.
