Lot description
6 vol., 8vo: (some spotting not really affecting the plates, first lvs of 4th vol. loose, without the printed title in vol. I).
Cont. quarter black sheep (corners rubbed and bumped), marbl. paper on covers (somewhat rubbed), blindst. and gilt orn. flat spines (some joints splitting, heads and tails def.). Inside good copy.
The 6 first vol. in first edition of Benjamin Maund's magnum opus and botanical delight for the eye, originally publ. monthly over a twenty-six year period in 13 vol. Our copy with the 6 additional engr. titles and 144 marvellous hand-coloured engraved plates by S. Watts after Mrs. E. Bury, Miss S. Maund, Miss E. Maund, E. D. Smith and Mills, each representing 4 flowers. Printed dedication to the "Lovers of Botany" in vol. I, dedication to the Queen in vol. 3. B. Maund (1790-1863), botanist, pharmacist and bookseller, was a fellow of the Linnean Society and was active in the committees of the Worcestershire Natural History Society. Ref.
