Folio: [24]-XI.cV (=1105)-[108]-xl pp. (lacking prelim. f. a6 and last pp. xli-lxxxix containing extra ills; engr. title repaired, toned, some soiling or spotting, local dampstaining).
Later calf, covers with blind and gilt ruled borders, gilt central ornament on front cover, gilt spine on 5 raised bands (rubbed & scratched, some rep.).
Second edition of the collected medical writings of Ambroise Paré (1510-1590), dealing i.a. with the plague, protheses, monsters. With liminary poetry by i.a. Ronsard and Dorat. Illustrated with engr. title, woodcut portrait of Paré and more than 350 woodcut ills in text showing anatomical representations, surgical instruments or devices, treatments and amputations, bandages, monsters and fabulous beasts, ... Many of these woodcuts are reprinted on the last 40 pages. Paré, military barber surgeon and also surgeon to French kings Henry II, Francis II, Charles IX and Henry III, is considered to be one of the fathers of surgery and modern forensic pathology, and a pioneer in surgical techniques and battlefield medicine, especially in the treatment of wounds.
