Lot description
Oblong 4to: [16]-747 [= 247]-[1] pp. (delicately cleaned, some foxing, first and last ff. sl. greyish).
Mottled calf signed L. Claessens, gilt-ruled covers with a central fleuron with Amor, gilt-orn. spine with raised bands with central Amor fleurons, gilt inside dentelle, red edges. Slipcase.
First edition of the Italian text by P. Benedetti, second edition of the Latin and French, of one of the most charming collections of love emblems by the Antwerp artist and teacher of Rubens, Otto Vaenius (1556-1629). Full-page copperplate and 124 copperplate emblems by Otto Vaenius, but for the first is signed by C. Boel, woodcut mark on title. Issue with imprint "Antverpia, venalia apud Auctorem, Prostant apud Hieronymum Verdussen" with some textual, typographical and punctuational variants.
